Dessa vez o inspetor Clouseau (Peter Sellers) tem que seguir as pistas do ladrão do famoso diamante “Pantera Cor de Rosa”. O principal suspeito é Charles Lytton (Christopher Plummer), conhecido como “O Fantasma”, a quem Clouseau segue até Nice. Só que trapalhão do jeito que é o detetive, ele acaba indo até a Suiça com a esposa de Lytton, que faz isso justamente para despistá-lo do paradeiro do marido. Enquanto seu chefe Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) fica à beira da loucura com tantos desastres, o inspetor começa a ser realmente sabotado.
